My favourite corner of the Mediterranean and why I keep coming back
"Some destinations you visit once. Koutouloufari is the kind of place that quietly becomes a part of you, and every summer something pulls you back."
Tucked up on the hillside above the north coast of Crete, the small village of Koutouloufari is my absolute number one destination on the island, and honestly, in all of Greece. It has everything I need: peace, warmth, genuine Greek character, and within easy reach, all the variety and fun you could want.
I've lost count of how many times I've returned. Every trip adds another layer to my love for this part of Crete, a new taverna discovered down a side street, a favourite bus route, a sunset view from the terrace.
The village at night has a magic of its own. Cobbled squares glow golden, the smell of grilled meat drifts from open kitchens, and life moves at exactly the right pace.

I've stayed in plenty of places on my travels, and nothing compares to the warmth of Mareva Apartments. This is authentic, traditional Greek accommodation, basic in the very best sense of the word. No resort buffet breakfasts, no manufactured holiday experience. Just clean, comfortable rooms, an honest price, and a genuinely lovely family running the show.
The family who operate Mareva are the heart of the place. They make you feel like a returning guest from the moment you arrive, because after your first visit, that's exactly what you become.
Koutouloufari sits on the hill, full of charm and quiet character. Hersonissos is just down the hill, buzzy, commercial, and full of life. You have both, on demand.
One of the best things about basing yourself in Koutouloufari is how well connected you are. The local bus service is cheap, reliable, and surprisingly good, I catch it regularly to explore the surrounding towns.
Relaxed resort, quieter beach
Lively, famous nightlife strip
The big resort hub down the hill
Beautiful harbour town to the east
The bus runs along the main coast road and tickets are very affordable. Just flag it down, pay on board, and enjoy the ride with the windows open and the sea glittering to your left.
The bus is wonderful for the coast, but hiring a car for even just one or two days unlocks the rest of Crete. I've done two day trips I will never forget, both worth every kilometre of the drive.
Home to Europe's only natural palm forest. One of the most striking beaches I've ever seen. Arrive early — by midday it fills up. Worth every kilometre.
Famous for its cliff caves once inhabited by hippies in the 1960s. A free-spirited energy unlike anywhere else on Crete, a completely different side of the island.
One of the great joys of Crete is the food. Whether you want a simple Greek salad at a village taverna, fresh grilled fish by the water, or a full mezze spread with local wine, you'll find it all within easy reach of Koutouloufari.
Evenings in Koutouloufari and the surrounding villages are one of life's great pleasures. Pull up a chair, order a cold Mythos and whatever's coming off the grill, and watch the world go by.
Simple, honest, delicious
Tables right on the rocks
Cretan grapes, unforgettable
Share everything at the table
The perfect end to any day
Baklava, loukoumades, ice cream
Beyond the well-trodden resort strip, there are some local spots that really reward those who go looking. These have become firm favourites of mine, quieter, more authentic, and genuinely lovely.
A beautiful traditional village just above Hersonissos. Narrow cobbled lanes, old stone houses, and a calmer atmosphere than the resort below. Often completely missed by holidaymakers Their loss, your gain.
Most people never venture beyond the main strip. The old harbour, the small fishing boats, restaurants perched right on the rocks — a quiet, charming pocket of history. Take a slow walk around it in the evening.
Heraklion — worth a day trip in its own right
It's a small family-run place and fills up. Don't leave it to chance — book ahead.
Cheap, easy, and connects you to the whole coast. No need for a car most days.
Even one day opens up Vai Beach, Matala, and the stunning interior.
Village tavernas in Koutouloufari and Piskopiano are often better and cheaper than resort restaurants.
Take the bus east for a half-day. The lake, the harbour, the cafés — beautiful.
Skip the main strip and explore Hersonissos old harbour in the evening. Completely different vibe.
